Happy Throwback Thursday,
Welcome back to Week 3 of the “Forget They Played There?” series, where each week we will look at a couple of players who spent a short amount of time with a franchise. Chances are if you are a die-hard fan, you will remember some of these, but I would be willing to say there are some you didn’t know, but most definitely some you forgot. This week, unlike previous weeks, we will be looking at one player who has multiple teams that I’d be surprised if you remember.
Sammy Sosa – Chicago White Sox, Texas Rangers, and Baltimore Orioles
Seven All-Star game apperances, 6 Silver Slugger Awards, and a league MVP award, with 600+ career homeruns sprinkled on top are a few of Sammy Sosa’s career achievements (granted, one of the all-time great Cubs careers is tainted by steroid useage in the late 90’s-early 2000’s). Sosa spent 13 seasons with the Chicago Cubs where he would win his MVP award and all of his other career accolades would come while playing in the North Side of Chicago, however did you know that he played 302 games on the South Side prior to coming to the Cubs?
Before making a name for himself with the Cubs, Sosa would play 302 games for the White Sox on the South Side of the city. After leaving the Cubs, he would play one season in Baltimore for the Orioles after being trade by the Cubs near the end of his career. After playing for the Orioles in the 2005 season, Sosa would “retire” only to return for the 2007 season. However, he would not return to Baltimore for his final season in the MLB, he would return where it all began, ending his career with the Texas Rangers. Pretty crazy that the “career” Cub, would play a grand total of 139 games for the Rangers, starting and ending his career there.
Till Next Time,
Trevor
