Happy Saturday.
This weekend, NASCAR will be at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for the first time in history. The Coliseum has hosted: two Olympic Games (third upcoming in 2028), a Super Bowl, World Series, and thousands of high profile concerts. It is an iconic sports venue world wide, and just adding NASCAR to it’s historic resume.

When you think of the Coliseum however, you think of football, with USC playing home games there since 1923, and the Los Angeles Rams spending two stints as tenants. So this brought to my head, what other high profile venues have held interesting/non-traditional events in their time.

I’ll leave out the obvious recent history events – Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park hosting football games, or all of the Winter Classic outdoor hockey games that are a yearly event now. I’m talking about “wait what?” events and here are a couple interesting ones I came across.

Bristol Motor Speedway – NASCAR / College Football

In 2016, the Tennessee Volunteers football team hosted the Virginia Tech Hokies at the famous NASCAR short track in Bristol, Tennessee. The game is the current record for most fans at a college football game, with 156,990 fans in attendance.

Indian Wells Garden – Tennis / NBA game

In 2008, the famous Tennis facility in California hosted it’s first of 3 NBA preseason games. Over the next 3 seasons, the NBA would play one preseason game a year there, but have not returned since 2010. I personally am a big fan of outdoor basketball and would be interested in the NBA doing more of this.

Fenway Park – Baseball / Extreme Sports

While Fenway has hosted it’s fair share of baseball games, and quite a few football games…the picture below has to be one of the most interesting events held at the historic ballpark. In 2016, Polartec held it’s Big Air at the Red Sox home, creating one wild looking event.

These are just a few of the interesting ones I’ve come across during my search, I’m sure there is thousands more and will keep an eye out for them!

Till Next Time,
Trevor
