Robinson Cano DFA’d

The Robison Cano experiment is over in Queens. The New York Mets have DFA’d the 39 year old Cano, oweing him 40 million dollars over the next 2 seasons.

The Mets traded 2 of their top prospects in 2018 to the Mariners for Cano, Edwin Diaz, and 20 million dollars. Those two top prospects being Jered Kelenic and Justin Dunn, haven’t turned out to be stars by any means, but it is safe to say they have more upside than the 35 year old Cano at the time. It was a questionable decision by the team then, and even more questionable now.

Over his 4 seasons in a Mets uniform, Robinson has only played a total of 168 games due to PED suspensions and COVID season. Luckily Edwin Diaz has performed in the Blue and Orange, however owing 40 million to a player who is unlikely to be claimed is going to hurt the franchise. Granted, they currently have the best record in the NL and are on fire, but none the less, it is going to hurt.

This could very well be the end to what should have been a Hall of Fame career, if the PED issue didn’t arise, for Cano. 8-All Star Appearances, 2 Gold Gloves, 5 Silver Sluggers, a World Series ring, and 2,600+ hits, Cano could get a shot somewhere but it seems unlikely.
