Two stories have consumed the NFL (and sports) world within the last 72 hours.
The first being Shedeur Sanders falling from “projected” 1st-round pick, to the 5th-round. Going from projected top 10, to 144th overall…behind 5 other QB’s.
Who could have predicted? – Click it… do it.

But the second story of the weekend wouldn’t come until Saturday (well, Shedeur story came Saturday as well, but it was talked about all three days of the draft).

Mel Kiper absolutely losing all credibility on national television

Rece Davis is a saint sent from above, and handled the situation with PURE CLASS and PROFESSIONALISM. When you know he wanted to smack Mel across his face.

You are an “analyst” and you act like you are God’s gift to draft projections. How about these ones, Mel?

A summary of some of his greatest analyst moments:

“Not surehanded enough to trade up for” – when the Falcons traded up to the #6 pick to Julio Jones (future Hall of Famer)

“The Lions will regret taking Calvin Johnson over Brady Quinn” – Brady Quinn is regarded as a bust, while Calvin is a member of the Hall of Fame.

“The Colts passing on Trent Dilfer for Marshall Faulk is why they draft #2 overall every year” – Marshall Faulk would become a Hall of Fame QB – while Trent Dilfer was… yeah…

But, let’s look specifically at recent memory – and more specifically QB analysis, since the NFL has such a problem with it… just ask Mel (see video above):

Player Comps:
David Carr = Troy Aikman
Jamarcus Russell = John Elway
Ricky Stanzi = Tom Brady

Rankings Problems

2017:
#1 Mitchell Trubisky
In the same class as #2 Patrick Mahomes and #3 Deshaun Watson

2018:
#3 Josh Rosen
Ahead of #4 Baker Mayfield & #5 Lamar Jackson

2019:
#10 Gardner Minshew (still in the league, granted a backup) while #2-#9 are either not in the league, or 2nd-3rd string. #1 Kyler Murray

2020:
#5 Jacob Eason
Ahead of #6 Jalen Hurts

2022:
#1 Malik Willis
#2 Kenny Pickett
– Long list of names you’ve never heard –
#16 Brock Purdy
I get it, no one expected it… but since Mel is such an amazing evalutator and the NFL can’t – he should have.

2023:
#2 Will Levis
Ahead of #3 Cj Stroud

While no one is ever truly accurate. To have a full melt down, on national television, and claim that the “NFL has an evaulating QB’s problem” – is just pure insanity when you:
1. Don’t work for an NFL team in the front office in any capacity
2. Never have worked as a scout/Assistant GM/Etc. in any capacity.

I’m not saying you have to be right. But if you’re going to have outlandish takes – you might want to have the track record to back it up.

I’ve never liked Mel, never understood why he got so much attention – and after today – I will never take another thing he says seriously again.

Retire, or ESPN relieve him.

Till Next Time,
Trevor
