As the title says, I don’t think a Cooper Kupp trade will truly happen…unless my theory is wrong.
What is the theory you ask?
This is all a ploy by the front office to force Matthew Staffords hand in retirement. The honeymoon is over in Los Angeles after McVay and Stafford led the Rams to a Super Bowl in their first year together in blue and yellow. However, since that 12-5 Super Bowl winning season, the QB/Head Coach combo is 22-18, with Stafford missing 8 games in 2022. Since his 4,886 yards in ’21, he has not reached the 4k mark in the following 3 seasons.
The past two seasons rumors have swirled about Matthew Stafford’s wife, Kelly, requesting the 36 (37 in 4 days) year old retire from the NFL and be a stay at home dad. However, Matthew has not been as accepting to the thought and returned for last year, and has shown hesitation in reports and interviews about retiring this offseason.
The Rams are ready to move on, they are ready for the next phase of the franchise – Life After Stafford. His best friend and top target being on the block is going to leave a sour taste in his mouth, and maybe this is just the Rams way of saying “hey, unless you retire, we are sending Coop elsewhere.” Because I can’t imagine a situation where they aren’t looking to bring in a new QB and lose Kupp as a target for their next guy.
Kupp himself posted on social media this afternoon after reports his distaste in the idea, how committed he is to LA, and how it is unfortunate to be on the block – but that he is ready to play.
Only time will tell… but I don’t think Cooper is going anywhere – unless Stafford doesn’t retire.
Till Next Time,
Trevor
