I do not understand.
I do not understand yearly actually.
Every year, some prospect flies up the NFL Draft boards, because all of these “experts” seem to think that they are better than they are. It makes no sense to me how someone like myself, a fan who I would like to think knows a little more than the average football fan, can sit at home and tell you “that guy isn’t going to be good in the NFL”, yet for some reason all of these so called Experts on the matter have guys flying up the board on their mock drafts.
Today’s story is that Anthony Richardson, Florida Gators’ quarterback, is going to to not only be a top 10 pick, but POTENTIALLY the FIRST overall pick… excuse me? Yeah, you read that right.
In the past, we always here things like “he’s creating alot of buzz around the league” (that is my personal favorite), “this guy is going to surprise people”, “he’s got ‘IT’ and someone is going to take him early”, “he’s a combonation of (insert two very good players)”, and on and on and on.
Then, we get to see players like Malik Willis (fell on draft day, but was a first round pick in every mock draft), Zach Wilson, Paxton Lynch, Jordan Love, Dwayne Haskins (RIP), Blake Bortles, to name a few… who flew up draft boards, who were going to surprise people, who were going to be the savior of a franchise and teams took in the first round… however they didn’t do anything in college other than beat up on some Group of 5 teams, set schools records at schools who have never had a real QB, and do a whole bunch of stuff that doesn’t translate to being a good NFL player.
Richardson in my opinion is that player this year, and I think he is going to be in the Malik Willis category unfortantely for him. He is going to fly up mock drafts of “experts”, but when it comes to draft day, the actual scouts and GM’s aren’t going to get fooled.
2549 yards, 17 TD’s, and 9 INT’s in the air – 654 yards and 9 TD’s on the ground. Not horrible statline, but when you consider the fact this is in the SEC, which is widely considered the closest thing to the NFL in college sports… it’s not that impressive of a stat line considering Bryce Young, the other top SEC QB prospect, threw for 32 TD’s, rushed for 4, and only threw 5 INTs with about 750 more yards in the air.
I don’t know much, but I feel like on-field stats and play does have a direct correlation to NFL performance, and I don’t see it happening with Anthony Richardson.
I hope he proves me wrong and in 5 years, we look back on this and say “you were so wrong, Trevor!” and I will have to eat my words.
Till Next Time,
Trevor
