Yep, you read that title right…
Tyler Huntley, Ravens’ Backup QB who threw for 2 TD’s and 3 INT’s this season, has been named an alternate for the Pro Bowl. Pro Bowl alternates are not explained by the NFL in terms of how they go about naming them or who ends up choosing them, but this is wild.
Patrick Mahomes was voted starter, however due to the Super Bowl he will not be playing. After Mahomes – Josh Allen and Joe Burrow were named backups, with Justin Herbert, Tua Tagovailoa, and Lamar Jackson being named alternates. Herbert, Tua, Allen, and Lamar are all missing the event due to injury. Joe Burrow was selected as #2 QB, however he has also chosen to not participate with non-injury related reasoning.
After injuries and such have played out, the current QB’s on the AFC’s Pro Bowl Roster are: Trevor Lawrence (Mahomes replacement), Derek Carr (Burrow), and Tyler Huntley (Allen).
To put this in perspective, Tyler Huntley’s 2 TD’s this season ranked 48th in Passing Touchdowns this season… Forty-Eighth.
While no QB’s truly “deserve” to be Pro Bowlers when you come down to the 5th alternate option (8th option total), there are countless other year long starters who should be headed to Las Vegas this week over Huntley.
Yet again, the Pro Bowl shows us why it is a joke and the NFL wonders why no one takes it seriously.
Till Next Time,
Trevor
